My thoughts on the Manawanui sinking based on what we know so far and my similar experience in HMS Endurance If the Captain's gender or sexuality bothers you, or if you think this made the slightest bit of difference, please don't bother commenting telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/10/0…

"Where's the deepest point in the Arctic Ocean?" This was a question we had on the Five Deeps Expedition. I dove the Molloy Deep, 5,550m (+/- 14m), but was the 'Gakkel Trench' deeper, under the icepack? Recent IBCAO 5 data shows this 'Gakkel Deep' as 5,421m at its deepest. Close.

I want to recognize the bravery of our Hurricane Hunters aboard the plane "Miss Piggy," which flew through #Milton over the Gulf of Mexico to collect lifesaving data. NOAA will continue to support communities on the frontlines of the hurricane with environmental intelligence.

Meanwhile in the USA, the US Navy version of the RFA is equally in trouble with only 5500 sailors for 4500 at sea billets - they need 10,000 people to make it work... stripes.com/branches/navy/…

Heading towards Paddington from Wales (1035 from Neath) in yet another half-length train with no seat reservations. Helpful train crew having to deal with frustrated travellers who pre-booked seats, stressful for crew too. Come on GWR you can do better!

Inside Hurricane Milton, Saildrone reported wave height of 28.12 feet and wind gusts as strong as 75.95 mph while 40 nautical miles from the center of the storm. This research represents a collaborative endeavor to better understand the role of the ocean in hurricanes.

What's your marine identity? New research led by University of Exeter and endorsed by the #OceanDecade defines marine identity—people's deep connection with the ocean—for the first time, and finds that understanding these identities can help restore the ocean. 👉ow.ly/vSmv50TJEV0

#MappingUpdate! These giant #seamounts were only 1,191 meters below #EVNautilus as we mapped them, making them ~4,300 meters tall! That's taller than #MtFuji and nearly as tall as #MtRainier.

🚨 A new model study suggests #seamounts could have a big effect on how the ocean circulates! This phenomenon, noticed especially in the Pacific Ocean, could account for about 1/3 of deep-ocean mixing! Seamounts are #OceanLifeLines! #ProtectSeamounts eos.org/articles/model…
