In the study students who received their grades at the same time as their feedback made almost no real improvement in a later assignment. Where students who received their feedback and then grades after a three-day delay performed 21% better.
There is a moral urgency around this: an effective lesson start doesn't waste their time, which is precious. It also sets the tone for learning so you can do whatever you like later on in the lesson.
This shouldn't be controversial.

I am ideological and passionate about not wasting student time. Not at lesson starts, not during the lesson, not ever.
That ideology comes from the fact that I have wasted student time in the past, and see it as a dominant theme in hundreds of lessons across the country.
Your intelligence cannot be measured by a number. It is defined by your willingness to learn, solve problems and try new things. You are more than just a number. Develop your skills. Share your brilliant ideas. Your skills are more valuable than your grades.
The same schools that raised funds for other conflicts seem to be silent on the current killing and displacing of civilians. We are told not to “play” politics, so let’s just look at this through a humanitarian lens & notice how unnoticed it is.
How can students engage in critical thinking about topics they know nothing about?
Moreover, how can they offer creative yet accurate alternative interpretations without knowledge of the original intent, context, and concepts?
