Farmland birds are still declining - by 8% in the past five years

By 60% since 1970

This isn’t OK, it’s catastrophic, shameful and our faults - collectively

And there is no way the current agri-environment schemes solve this is reverse it - ZERO chance

A Marsh Harrier was out hunting this morning, soaring over the pits behind Watch Cottage.

In 1971 there was only one nesting female left in the country - thankfully through conservation efforts, there are now more than 600 pairs.

Just because summer has been and gone, it doesn't mean you won't see butterflies out on the nature reserve. This week several Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell have been spotted on the hunt for nectar.

A lucky visitor spotted a Spoonbill using it's spatula-like bill to feed in the shallow water. They are notorious for spending large amounts of time asleep, with their heads tucked frustratingly under a wing - so patience is required!

Golden Plover are beginning to return for the winter. As their numbers build, they provide a fantastic spectacle as flocks of up to 3,000 birds roost on the large, open, undisturbed areas of the nature reserve.

From Dr Barry Yates - 'Least Lettuce is still flowering during mornings in early October!' It's the rarest plant Rye Harbour Nature Reserve but very hard to find on the Beach Reserve as its flowers are small and only open in the mornings!
