Tree and mycorrhizal fungal diversity affect leaf functional traits in trees! This is what Tilo Monjau, Kezia Goldmann, Olga Ferlian, Nico Eisenhauer (Eisenhauer Lab), Helge Bruelheide, Zeqing Ma Lab, Sylvia Haider and I found in our recent study in Functional Ecology besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13…

New paper! Taylor Readyhough & Andrew Butler🦊 led a review of 70,000 U.S. mammal studies over the last 100 years to assess publication trends Key results in figure. Conservation status surprisingly unimportant. We ID taxa that need more work (weasels!) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/author/U…

Future small mammal trapping helper. I’m impressed that he figured out how to fold up Sherman traps at 3.5 years old, but unfortunately his attention span is pretty short.

🔥 New paper in Ecology Letters! Synchrony of beech masting is stronger in years of seed scarcity than mast peaks. Scarcity occurs across the species range, amplifying famines triggered by seed scarcity and impacting food webs. shorturl.at/B1hw2

Beech, spruce and silver-fir benefited from masting through decreased predispersal insect predation and greater pollination efficiency. These effects were stronger for beech than conifers species. Paper of the week: besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13…

Our lab is investigating spore dispersal up the food chain. My masters student, Wes, is feeding mice laced with truffle spores to asses the potential of raptors in secondarily dispersing mycorrhizal fungi.

Ryan Stephens and team found that the timing of mast availability had a strong influence on when reproduction takes place in a small mammal community...🐁 buff.ly/46K7cau

Fisher trapping season is starting! We've set and baited the traps, now we wait... This fisher study is led by COLSA MSc student Frank Shinost, Research Scientist Will Chrisman, vet extraordinaire Dr. Megan Munis, and PIs Remington Moll Dr. David Needle.

Today was our last day of summer small mammal trapping. Certainly not an easy summer but we made adjustments and I’m looking forward to next year. Ended up with around 600 individuals from 10 species at 42 sites across an 800m elevation gradient in East Tennessee. #fieldwork

1/2 Seeds dispersed by frugivores are temporarily retained inside their guts until they eject them. We show here that plant species differ in their dispersal potential because seed size influences retention times in frugivorous birds. 🔓 besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/13…
