With 2025 marking 80 years since the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, UNIDIR continues its work to reduce nuclear risks through research and dialogue. #UNIDIR45 The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty remains central to this work. Do you know when it entered into force?

Yes, of course. It's called "initial declaration." Having an agreement with verification provisions can get you a lot of interesting information.

Wow. Trump intends to meet with Putin directly as soon as next week and then, “shortly afterward,” hold a trilateral meeting with Zelensky too. “It was not immediately clear if Mr. Putin or Mr. Zelensky had agreed to the plan Mr. Trump described.” lol nytimes.com/2025/08/06/us/…

The source is, how should I say it?, not exactly reliable. Here is the lecture given by Boris Litvinov (Chief Designer of the Chelyabinsk/Snezhinsk KB) in 2001: elib.biblioatom.ru/text/litvinov_… He doesn't give a specific number, but there is no way 1.5 m is a critical height for a weapon

"Ukrainian Support for War Effort Collapses" -- quite a headline for the new Gallup poll. Somewhat of an exaggeration of the actual findings, but nonetheless there is a strong shift toward support for negotiating an end to the war in the short term. news.gallup.com/poll/693203/uk…

NEW: The strange road to Trump's summit with Putin wound through Belarus, where Lukashenko served as a backchannel between the White House and the Kremlin. I interviewed him in Minsk and spoke to over a dozen U.S. and European diplomats to understand how it worked. 1/

So the deal, according to Bloomberg, is all of Donetsk and Lugansk regions to Ru in exchange for a Russian promise not to advance to Kherson and Zaporizhia and a full freeze. Plus some kind of a US/Ru memo on future relations between Ru and the West, plus some sanctions relief.

Pete Hegseth doesn’t want to talk about his hugely ambitious missile defense project. Maybe that’s because all anyone knows about Golden Dome is that it will be an expensive, all-azimuth defense against everything that flies - and unlikely to work theatlantic.com/national-secur…

Putin’s visit to Alaska next week will be the first time he’s set foot on U.S. soil since September 2015, when he met with Obama on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Putin has never been to the U.S. West Coast before.

It's really hard to tell what to expect from the Alaska summit. Those who say it won't change anything have good points. One thing is, for the Kremlin it's not about territories. It's probably not even about Ukraine. It's about recognition. This is something the US might deliver.
