This sums up what is always the most interesting part of coaching but often the most overlooked. To paraphrase: One of the key roles of coaching is not to build fitness but to help athletes to express their fitness on the day that they need in the race scienceofrunning.com/2018/01/how-a-…

I once said to my coach after my first child that (if you put aside the huge physical impact of pregnancy, impact on sleep & difficult practicalities of childcare to train) having a young child provided much needed balance to the obsessive focus on striving to be the best 😬😉🤣

The Devil O' the Highlands race (42M, April '25) has split entries 50/50 to increase women on the start line. There are still women's spaces left. If any woman is reading this and thinking "I'm not [whatever] enough", get in touch for a chat & a month's free training. devilothehighlands

Too often, on social media we glorify people running workouts poorly. If you get progressively slower, where the fastest reps are the 1st ones...you are doing it wrong. The goal for most interval workouts is to distribute energy well.

Delighted to be chatting to BBC Essex radio tomorrow morning about the impact of puberty on young female athletes and how we can keep them in the sport. Thanks to UK Coaching for setting up the interview and supporting more women into coaching too 🙌🏻 Tune in 9:10am ish

Just about every world-class endurance athlete I've asked says the same thing: They want to quit during a race It's natural to want to quit. Your brain is looking for a 'better' alternative to escape the threat of pain. Doubts are normal The best train to navigate them better

New entry standards for championship entry at the 2025 London Marathon; 2:38 for men (2:40 in 2024) and 3:10 for women (unsure of 2024). Brand new system to be used in 2026 with entry no longer guaranteed if you run the time. tcslondonmarathon.com/enter/how-to-e…

Delighted to be Volunteer of the Year at Cheltenham Harriers. As I joked yesterday on bad weather days I secretly hope no one turns up. But they do wind/rain & snow! So big thanks all at Cheltenham Harriers. Because a coach without any athletes is just a weirdo with a stopwatch🤣

The vast majority of recovery interventions come down to: does it make you feel better? Normatec, foam rolling, massage, etc If it makes you feel better on race day, go for it Is it more placebo than reality? Maybe. But as long as there's minimal downside, feeling better helps

Looks like I am back for London Marathon Number 6! Getting older. Getting slower every time. But still can’t resist that London vibe. If I close my eyes & just listen to the crowd I can almost believe I am running as fast as London Marathon Number 1 😝🤣 ❤️ #Londonmarathon
