Eight years ago today, a Cleveland police officer killed Tamir Rice. Tamir should be alive today and 20 years old. We will always remember him. We will always fight for him.

THIS!!!! Yes, we should use research. Also, "research" & "science" are complex terms (like "reading,"), especially when we're talking about researching human interactions. We need to be sure we have shared understanding when we use them & ask which definitions serve which people.

This school and its sister school, Castle Bridge, are both awesome. Love seeing this get some media attention. We need more like this!

‘ What works’ usually means ‘what raises test results’. That is assumed to be an unequivocal Good Thing. No discussion about the point of education. No matter what the consequences - e.g high anxiety levels, or children learning think of themselves as stupid. 10/

Many think meta-analysis is more powerful because it has more underlying data points. I’d argue that in education meta-analyses often obscure rather than illuminate understanding. They need to be taken with many, many grains of salt (maybe even a whole pillar of it).

A light bulb moment for me was realizing that much of the talk about student "motivation" (how to boost it or why a given kid lacks it) is really code for talking about compliance - that is, the extent to which students do whatever we tell them.

gse.harvard.edu/news/23/03/har… I'm excited about the tendency in some corners of the world, of the literacy world, to recognize that just teaching literacy skills is an inadequate approach. Literacy skills are tools for children. They want to do something.

Eyes on the ball:"Despite nebulous claims that there is widespread neglect of phonics in classrooms, no recent data substantiate those claims...There are possibilities, grounded in data, that are at least as reliable & convincing as increasing phonics." washingtonpost.com/education/2023…

One-eighth of fourth graders are truly struggling with reading. They should be the focus of policy. Instead, the Twitter Chicken Little crowd wants you to believe 2/3 are struggling. Not true. tomloveless.com/posts/literacy…

These lovies were found in the parking lot of a McDonald's off of exit 77 on I-95 south in South Carolina. They have been left with the manager. Please spread the word to help reunite them with their owner.
