If you are able, please support my very good friend and colleague, whose house burnt to the ground this weekend. Thankfully, all people and animals are safe. Jessi's faith and positivity in the midst of tragedy are inspiring. Please share. gofundme.com/f/help-the-hae…

Trump’s administration just canceled the R15 grants for medical and graduate schools. The applications were due in 2 weeks. The call was just renewed in December. The R15s have nothing to do with DEI.

IMPORTANT: University of Utah could lose $43.5M for research expenses under Trump admin cut. That money support projects like the development of new cancer-fighting drugs. sltrib.com/news/education…

My time in industry convinced me of the importance of basic, government funded science research. It was crazy how much of the stuff we did was based directly on academic research that in-and-of-itself would have been too risky and/or too low-return for the company to do

NEW -- In the span of one month we may just witnessed a generational blow to science in America. The DOGE-induced brain drain has very much begun thebulwark.com/p/the-doge-bra…

Proud of this team and work, which would not have been possible without the NIH. The kinesin Kar3 is required for endoplasmic reticulum–associated degradation | Molecular Biology of the Cell molbiolcell.org/doi/10.1091/mb…

As if professor positions were the only available or desired outcomes for PhD students... And very few PhD students work close to the hours he describes.

“So maybe that’s what I would say to JD Vance is: ‘What you did in Springfield—I’m terrified that you’re going to do that to one of my nurses . . . who’s just a simple, good man. You know, you destroyed these people’s lives for no good reason.” thebulwark.com/p/the-miraculo…

News of the first NIH grant cuts at Columbia medical center have come in. Center grants (including of the diabetes center where I am), training grants for PhD students. PhD students are certainly not the reason for federal budget woes, they are among the most altruistically

Kar3 isn't just for mitosis—it helps take out the cellular trash. 🧹 New from Eric Rubenstein (Ball State): Kar3 & Vik1 are essential for ER-associated degradation, linking microtubules to protein quality control. 📖 molbiolcell.org/doi/10.1091/mb… #ASCB #CellBio #ERAD #Microtubules

Huge thanks to Guillaume Thibault and Julie Hollien for organizing a warm, welcoming FASEB ER meeting filled with incredible science! Excited that I will carry the torch as a co-organizer for the 2027 meeting….can’t wait! FASEB

Think the mitotic spindle just pulls chromosomes apart? Think again. It also wrangles membranes & organelles during cell division. Francesco Scavone (Stanford University) explores how it all works—and why it matters. 🔍 molbiolcell.org/doi/full/10.10… #ASCB #CellBiology
