Don't be contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.

It can help, but it can also go the other way if you do it wrong.

For example:

Two traits that will serve you in any function at every level:

1. Understand the big picture.

Both within your function and at the company level. There are considerably more people who are strong at the tactical level than those who are strong at the strategic level so this is

Success seems to come back to the same few things for me:

1. Control my morning - go hard in the gym, create free space in my brain, and have uninterruptible time blocks for deep work.

2. Focus on as few things as I can - I’ve found that life is rarely about adding more. It’s

“How much should I spend on advertising for my DTC channel?”

The first step towards answering that question is to determine what your DTC channel level goals are at the Contribution Margin line.

Anyone who talks about work/life balance obviously doesn’t have young kids.

Because the “life” part of that equation is a heavier lift than the “work” part.

If you want your team to make better decisions, they need information and context.

A lot of the same context and information you have as the Founder/CEO.

To that end, transparency is critical.

Here are 3 ways to be more transparent with your team:

• Meeting notes - document

There’s a carnival at the elementary school on Friday.

Apparently boys ask girls to go to said carnival.

Both my girls (10,9) were asked today.

I’m not ready for this.

SMS is effective, but the length of time for an SMS subscriber vs an email is significantly shorter in my experience.

Once the novelty wears off, I think the average person will allow 2-3 brands access to their text inbox, max.

So I think it will be a very effective channel

The only people who insist experience is overrated don’t have any.

Yes, it’s totally possible to succeed without it.

And yes, sometimes it can be a detriment.

There are always exceptions.

But experience is weighted appropriately.

You realize that when you step into a

You will discover who you truly are when you are in the suck.

When you are sitting in it, it's hard to see the surface.

But it’s in these periods of intense pain and hardship and sadness that we find out who we are.

Is that messed up?

Yes. But that doesn’t stop it from being

If you want to become a great marketer, focus on these skills:

1. Storytelling (+ copywriting)- the ability to turn features into benefits, explain complex ideas in a simple way, and tell compelling stories that resonate with customers.

2. Analytical skills - marketers are

Marketers who owned a P&L felt more confident in their role.

That’s THE big takeaway from a Next Generation CMO Academy I attended put on by Deloitte.

This makes sense on a number of levels.

1. A lot more interaction with other members of the leadership team.

When emotions run high, intellect runs low.

Sometimes the best thing to do is to say nothing.

Take a few deep breaths, stand up, and walk away.

Resist the urge to talk, text, or email.

And don’t make any decisions until you are no longer emotionally charged.
