I wasn't expecting the Taj Mahal, Hanging Gardens of Babylon, or herds of majestic wildebeest. But I feel a little short changed by the view from this Torquay hotel window.

If a driver has an incident, one of the very first things the investigation will check is whether they took their break. Woe betide any driver who didn't.

I have to hand it to Chiltern Main Line. Drove over the rattly, jointed bit of the Risborough branch in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Back early Monday and I'm driving over a stretch of perfect, brand new track, handed back on time :)

The gradient post at the north end of Aylesbury station in 2003 and 2024. I'm not sure if it is of Met, GWR, GCR or LNER origin. Presumably the concrete post was shattered when the bridge pier was demolished.

One of my first vaguely acceptable railway photos: 4930 "Hagley Hall" nearing the top of Sapperton bank on 2nd February 1985. Clearly trespass was less of a hot issue then. (I was at a footpath crossing).

Let's have your most pitiful/tenuous celebrity encounter. I'll go first. I met Tommy Banner out of The Wurzels at Portishead Flower Show in the early 1980s and he signed the Famous Five paperback I bought for 10p at the second-hand book stall.

Quick litmus test for UK climate activists. If they start complaining about HS2 (cost, emissions, habitat impact, etc) ask them their thoughts on RIS2. When they say “what is RIS2?” You know they’ve not really got a handle on this whole thing.
