There's a REASON! No, literally, there's a REASON (Radar for Europa Assessment and Sounding: Ocean to Near-surface)! On board NASA Europa Clipper, this ice-penetrating radar can bounce waves off any liquid water under the surface, creating a kind of CT scan of Europa’s ice shell.

U.S. Poet Laureate Ada Limón got to do something very special on Monday. She watched as a spacecraft carrying her poem, "In Praise of Mystery: A Poem for Europa," lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, the first step in a 1.8-billion mile voyage to Jupiter’s moon. 🧵

One week ago: we set sail for Jupiter's ocean moon Europa. The spacecraft is now about 2.41 million miles (3.88 million kilometers) from Earth. Next up are a series of checkouts and instrument deployments, then a flyby of Mars. All about the mission: nasa.gov/europaclipper

💡We made TIME! TIME released its “Inventions of 2024” annual listing of innovations and two LSP missions made the cut! #EuropaClipper, the largest NASA spacecraft ever built for a planetary mission and NASA's first mission dedicated to studying an ocean world beyond Earth.

It's an honor to have my piece, delivered to the NASA Europa Clipper team on the eve before launch, in Washington Post Opinions. It's inspired in part by my late mom, who wrote poetry all her life, and my late brother, who passed away too soon to see this remarkable mission launch toward Europa.

Laying off thousands of NASA employees isn’t going to make anything better. NASA is the scientific envy of the world. I’m horrified by the number of people who think SpaceX can “replace” NASA. SpaceX doesn’t do astronomy. They do spacecraft.

Folks - I'd like to let you know the NASA Europa Clipper SSR papers are now all published & where to find them, but unfortunately, X-Twitter has become a cesspool and is owned by a neo-Nazi, so I will no longer be posting here. Please come find me on #Bluesky instead. Thanks, all.
