Violence is not protest. Hatred has no place in South Yorkshire. The best - indeed the only - response to the heartbreaking attack in Southport, and the violence we’ve seen across the country, is to redouble our efforts to look out for and after each other. That is who we are.

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard attended the clean up in Rotherham this morning, alongside many members of the community. It was heartening to see the best of South Yorkshire. This is who we really are.

He is right. Most people are decent & appalled by this violence. Not all of those people will shout out on these platforms but many are quietly stepping forward, reaching out, physically & metaphorically sweeping up, repairing & rebuilding our places & communities. #HopeNotHate
