It's fascinating. Tariffs are the only issue that Trump has always cared about - he's been talking about them since the 1980s. And in all that time, he's never learned anything about the actual economics of trade.

As a reminder, Congress could repeal all these tariffs tomorrow and take back the complete authority over tariffs and trade that the Constitution gives it. Every congressman who does not vote to do that is effectively choosing to support this massive tax on US consumers.

This round of tariffs is likely illegal, since Trump is relying on his authority under the IEEPA, which requires there to be an "unusual and extraordinary threat," which a trade deficit is not. But it's very unlikely a court will overrule Trump. So it's up to Congress to act.
