It seems like we are finally entering the brave new world of DSM: Focusing on carbon (instead of kWh) and introducing demand flexibility. These steps will change the genome of DSM portfolios.

This could mean that in our cleantech industry proximity to projects/clients will become more critical and we may start seeing companies adding many satellite offices that are geographically spread out. Glad that I had this vision for Rouj since 2016 tinyurl.com/shjdujw

Weekly consumption by PGE with projected cost for the month. I somehow think a new trend is starting. This is not an alert by a program and is sent to all customers probably due to high residential load/cost post-Corona but this trend can be transformative Portland General

I think the new post-pandemic trends in energy consumption should be studied and used as a precursor for future load forecasting when a significant percentage of employees will be working from home. WFH is a long-term trend and here to stay although with a subtler slope.

200 MW worth of solar + storage (#energytwitter, we need a new abbreviation for solar plus storage, SPS maybe?) - That's a really good size. For a sense of magnitude, 200 MW is enough power to island ~29,000 homes.

Petroleum seems to be plateauing: prioritize EVs. Natural gas is getting really close to plateau: electrify; build clean power plants. Coal is doing its thing: market driven, natural, and almost effortless decline; it seems like its reduction is getting filled by non-fossil share

This describes how we work at Rouj. An established network of SMEs constantly regrouping to tackle a specific research question based on the topic at hand. I have to say, since I started Rouj, I have experienced the most efficient and productive way of collaborating.

Rouj’s Senior Data Scientist, Andrew Bernath, will be presenting on the impact of COVID-19 on the M&V and data analytics of strategic energy management programs leveraging Rouj’s experience in impact analysis of SEM programs across North America. See you there!

I’d rather live in a sexy, up and coming microgrid and have my power shut off as they go through the learning curve as opposed to a big old dirty utility not being able to manage the peak.

It’s becoming apparent that we need to shift and reorient our DSM focus and prioritization from energy saving (kWh) measures to demand saving (kW) measures. And for that we need to utilize hourly meter data. Sorry, load shape and engineering analysis is not sufficient anymore.

We need to urgently update forecasting tools and plans to factor in the additional load associated with installing ACs for the first time. After these heat waves, many that could live without AC on the West Coast will be frantically installing ACs before the next summer...

Real time evaluation is the way to go. Retrospective evaluation often times loses the timely feedback loop to inform program design, missing the ultimate goal of any DSM evaluation other than the accounting aspect.

I saw a friend of mine in the elevator picking up her kid from school. She said they called her to say school is closed because they used to have classes with a small number of kids served by HVACs using100% outside air for COVID and now they have to set them at 0% outside air...

This conference is not happening in London as it was supposed to, but I’m still glad to be talking about how an agile embedded evaluation can help discover deeper, more accurate and more transparent savings.
