Over 59 hrs 40 mins, this drill bit cut through 1039 m of rock, spanning 32 million yrs of geologic time on the way to volcanic basement, 3 km below our ship JOIDES Resolution. Now we need to change the bit for a new one before it wears out, so that we can get more core! #Exp395 #IODP

These glittery calcite crystals grew in a crack in the 32 million year old basalt we cored on ocean drilling ship JOIDES Resolution this week. Water depth: 2.2 km Rock depth: 1.1 km Ships capable of doing this after 2024: 0 #Exp395 #IODP

Scientific ocean drilling folks! Please consider signing and sharing our letter to U.S. National Science Foundation detailing why we need concrete commitments now to support our field given the rapidly approaching retirement of JOIDES Resolution Academic Chatter™ IODP at Texas A&M docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

An update for those who signed our letter to U.S. National Science Foundation asking them to support the scientific ocean drilling community in the U.S.: Director McManus sent us a reply, detailing much of the same we’ve been hearing— the future of our field remains uncertain.

New research from Brian Tucholke & Deborah Smith Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and Ross Parnell-Turner Scripps Institution of Oceanography shows that magma supply—not the rate of seafloor spreading—is the strongest predictor for how seafloor morphology is formed. #AGUPubs eos.org/research-spotl…

AGU Session Alert 🚨: iMAGE-CREATE are sponsoring the AGU Session V013. Linking magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes in arc-backarc and mid-ocean ridge settings. We welcome all submissions from those working along MORs and back-arcs!

At approximately 10:06 am this morning Amsterdam time, #Exp403 officially came to an end, and with it the U.S. scientific ocean drilling program. Here’s the last time scientists will walk the gangway leaving JOIDES Resolution
