New parents will doubtless be grateful for the baby banks but what they really need is investment in better rates of pay and benefits. SMP is currently less than half the higher rate NMW for a working week.

'A coalition of 48 organisations, including the Trades Union Congress, CitizensAdvice, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Fawcett Society and Maternity Action, said bringing back [employment tribunal] fees, which were ditched in 2017, meant “bad employers are being given the go-ahead to undercut good ones”.

When you have 48 organisations, including the TUC, Citizens Advice, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Fawcett Society and Maternity Action saying don’t bring back fees to take a case to the employment tribunal - you would hope ministers would listen

Utterly stupid plan
