I truly love that James L. Brooks basically just waited out the disastrous reception of HOW DO YOU KNOW (good movie!) and seems to have just like flat-out made another one just like that with ELLA MCCAY.

I know that people aren't on pins and needles waiting to hear what I thought of WEAPONS but I like to imagine they are and I'm just delivering breaking news about how Vanessa Bayer absolutely steals FREAKIER FRIDAY.

Obviously the best way to support rep programming is membership at or frequenting the Metrograph or MOMI or any number of others but it's still kind of wild that I can get my Stubs subscription's worth on AMC rep titles alone.

Everyone (?) knows the phrase Ain't It Cool was taken by the website from a John Travolta line in the John Woo movie BROKEN ARROW. But weirder, Nic Cage says it again in Woo's next movie, playing a Travolta character. I haven't seen PHENOMENON; does Travolta do it there too??

FREAKIER FRIDAY is funnier than the original and also worse-made with some truly incoherent editing. Reviewed it for the A.V. Club. avclub.com/freakier-frida…

I reviewed Zach Cregger's ambitious and entertaining horror drama WEAPONS. (*Maybe* those MAGNOLIA comparisons are a little out of hand.) polygon.com/weapons-review…

Something I forgot to mention in my FREAKIER FRIDAY review is that it features a lengthy scene in a Walgreens. As did HOCUS POCUS 2. Pure Disney magic! Enchanting children of all ages by having its characters tool around a chain pharmacy as presumably contractually agreed-upon.

There's a moment in HIGHEST 2 LOWEST where it switches from digital to 16mm for a location shift and then I ran around the screening room giving everyone high fives. Maybe that last part didn't happen but it was still really cool.

I don't know anything about dating in 2025 but I have definitely seen my share of bad indie comedies about open relationships so I can say with certainty that SPLITSVILLE is the only funny one. And it's really fucking funny!
