Thanks to the seabird ringing grant from the BTO I spent last week in Aberdeenshire with Team Shag, undertaking an ongoing colour ringing project. An awful winter has gutted their population by 90% but still managed to ring 26 new adults + other species. A fantastic experience!

I thought I’d revisit the idea of scrub on farmland but this time from a ‘why it’s good for your #farm’ point of view rather than the ‘why nature loves it’ point which you see more often So #scrub… short bushy plants that birds love Often a dense thorny mix of shortish plants🔽

My son just found this wonderful crab at low tide on the Sussex coast. Amazing seaweed camouflage. Anyone know the species?

Why do so many wader scrapes perform poorly? The problem is often a stable water regime. The key to managing scrapes is to build high invertebrate biomass & then to make it available to birds within dynamically managed shallow water regime with bare/sparsely vegetated mud. 1/4

The Corn Bunting breeding season has now come to an end with some incredible data gathered: 25 nests monitored for the BTO nest record scheme, 45 chicks colour ringed, and 30 faecal samples collected to analyse chicks diets. All providing data to help conserve the species.

Welcome to this World little Storm-petrel. If you live to be one of the oldest of Stormies (33 yrs), I'll be over 60 when you're still fluttering over the wildest oceans on the planet. I really hope we can clean up this planetary mess for you in the meantime... #StubbornOptimism

Nightjar flypast Fair Isle Bird Obs yesterday evening. A record-breaking year of occurrence for this species here, with this being the fourth individual of the year

I am delighted how many slow worms are living under the dustbin lid in our tiny city centre garden! I have heard that the name for a group of slow worms is a gloss… so look at our glossy huddle! So pleased that there are enough invertebrates to keep them fed and thriving.

What a great conference organised by West Midlands Ringing Group and BTO! Fascinating talks about thermal tech to improve the quality of ringing and nest recording data, as well as other great projects. #BTOCE24 #NestRecordScheme
