Some trade deficits seem big in nominal dollars but, The US imports $135B from Vietnam, on a $27T economy, or, 0.5% of our GDP. Vietnam imports $14.5B from the US on a $417B economy, or 3.4%. So really, we export more to them as a % of their GDP than they do to us.

In other words, our economy is 65 times larger than Vietnam's, so, in nominal dollars, to be "fair", the ratio of imports to exports could be 65x

I'm normally not a big fan, but this is an absolutely brilliant answer by Larry Summers to the oft-repeated argument that China is somehow "cheating" in trade. In fact it's probably the best answer I've ever heard on this. It goes back to the point I was making

Trump explains MAGA's central planning approach to the economy in his Time interview - "We are a department store, and we set the price. I meet with the companies, and then I set a fair price, what I consider to be a fair price, and they can pay it, or they don't have to pay it."

I wish conservatives understood one thing: If it weren’t for blue states, the U.S. would be a third world country with broadband holes, broke schools, and zero innovation. Red states take the federal money. Blue states make it. You don’t fund the country, you drain it. Bad
