I've been on strike since 2018 over cuts to my pension because the scheme was in so much trouble that it now has *checks notes* a surplus of ÂŁ7.6bn. Journalists, please do your job and hold university managers to account for the unnecessary disruption they've caused to students.

I have many thoughts about the Guardian story. But one is that VCs we’re complicit in getting here because the government stuffed their mouths with gold, to use a well known phrase, back when 9k fees came in and, for some reason, 1/n

Decent write-up of the situation here, though notable that a) once again no-one saw fit to include any comments from DUCU, and b) the article ends with Raj Jethwa suggesting it's *UCU* who are refusing to negotiate, which is precisely opposite to reality. theguardian.com/education/2023…

So, UCEA. Membership fees go up because of inflation. No, not you, university employees. You can just get poorer. Wonder if any VCs have objected to this clause.

📜📜This new research is groundbreaking. With a UBI: Between 125,000 - 1 million cases of depressive disorders could be prevented or postponed. Between 120,000 - 1.04 million cases of significant physical hlth symptoms could be prevented or postponed. autonomy.work/portfolio/trea…

We choose degrees because the subject matter is fundamental to how we see and experience the world. Which in turn makes us happier, more confident, more self-sustaining and more capable of making positive choices in our lives - of which career is only one part #HigherEducation

This piece ends by raising the (excellent) point that the endgame of 'marketisation' in HE is the government announcing they will intervene to prevent students from studying on courses there is demand for theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Only 55% of Brits think everyone should be able to afford a television. In today’s The Guardian I wrote about the insistence that people on benefits and low wages should have to live a life of misery - a kind of penance for their capitalist failure. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

My friend (and at that time) fellow PhD student had to spend 2 years without her child. Nobody even knows that she had to go through this...she was silently working on her research and suffering all alone. These are not random stories, this is a reality of too many researchers.

I'm running for a spot on UCU's National Executive Committee (NEC) because I believe in the power of our collective action, transparent leadership & long-term strategies to protect our sector. Ballots open 27 January. #UCUNEC
