There’s only one way to keep the AfD at bay. Address the concerns it exploits. Telling voters that these concerns aren’t real has not turned to be an election-winning strategy, I argue in The Guardian 👇 theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Kurt Volker, Dan Fried & I have just published an article "The EU fiddles while Kyiv burns" calling for the EU to act NOW to fulfill its G7 promise in June to deliver $50 bn to Ukraine by prolonging the EU freezing of Russia's sovereign assets. politico.eu/article/eu-g7-…

Can forecasters predict uncertain times? That is, does their own assessment of uncertainty change on par with changes in their forecasting ability? For both output and inflation the answer is no for horizons longer than one year but yes for shorter-run forecasts. 1/n

Italy saw another big jump in exports to Kyrgyzstan in May 2024 (black). None of this stuff actually goes to Kyrgyzstan. If you look at Kyrgyz data on imports from Italy (blue), they're flat. Kyrgyzstan is just what gets written on the invoice. This stuff is going to Moscow...

All Western pathos about unprecedented sanctions and determination against Russian tyranny rings hollow, when this 👇 is allowed to happen in plain sight.

They are not really sanctions if they are not enforced. Sanctions without enforcement is like condemnations and concerns, nobody cares.

Delighted to have Stephen Miran on the show this week to discuss his work with Nouriel Roubini on activist treasury issuance (ATI). Steve makes the case and responds to pushback against ATI including that from Secretary Janet Yellen. We also discuss potential $ policies in a second Trump

America is facing a shortage of between 1.1 million and 5.5 million homes, and the shortfall in affordable rental housing is even more acute. Ben Harris evaluates a proposal by Kamala Harris to boost U.S. housing inventory. usnews.com/opinion/articl…

Questo è uno sconcio. Aggirare le sanzioni vuol dire finanziare la Russia mentre bombarda l’Ucraina. Procederemo con un’interrogazione a Urso e Giorgetti.

The many retweets of this post speak so highly of Italy and its people. The EU in its current form is the lowest common denominator of 27 countries. It protects Greek shipping oligarchs and exporters, not its people. That must change. Transparency and accountability are needed...

From the moment Russia invaded Ukraine, Europe should have been weakening Russia as much as possible. Instead, there's a shameful flood of exports to Russia that's invoiced to Kyrgyzstan. In the end, we want to be led by people who do the right thing. This is NOT the right thing.

Robin Brooks is doing a public service calling this stuff out—we know export controls are leaky, but when you see these figures it really drives home just how leaky they are. Very disappointing data.
