New (short) paper investigating how the in-context inductive biases of vision-language models — the way that they generalize concepts learned in context — depend on the modality and phrasing! 1/4

Yay! See you at this year's VSS Meeting! Excited to bring together my undergrad advisors (Yan Bao, Ernst Pöppel) and Zane Icon-lab in one project. With a fun set of abstract paintings by contemporary artist LaoZhu, we found that lower activation in DNNs predict higher beauty.

Very happy that this work is now published in eLife! We find that humans are unique in the way they encode pairs of stimuli, in the context of symbol-object relations. If you've learned that A->B, you spontaneously generalize it to B->A! The full story : elifesciences.org/articles/87380

"Coordinating multiple mental faculties during learning" There's lots of good work in object recognition and learning, but how do we integrate the two? Here's a proposal and model that is more interactive than perception provides the inputs to cognition. nature.com/articles/s4159…

20+ years ago, an idea about cortical lateralization of audition was advanced: asymmetric sampling in time AST. This extensive review/reevaluation by chantaloderbolz, me, and Martin Meyer assesses how the idea has fared. #notallwrong sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

New preprint (#neuroscience #deeplearning doi.org/10.1101/2025.0…)! We trained 20 DCNNs on 941235 images with varying scene segmentation (original. object-only, silhouette, background-only). Despite object recognition varying (27-53%), all networks showed similar EEG prediction.

NSD has profoundly shaped vision science. Inspired by it, we combined fMRI and Neuropixels to build a macaque dataset with 1,000 natural images. We’re excited to share Triple-N and welcome feedback from the community!
