In the week leading up to Remembrance, we’d like to reflect on those that have served and are no longer with us. Surg Lt Cdr Ahuja died on 3 Dec 14. Formerly an MO at 45 Commando RM, he also completed the AACC and had started his anaesthetics training. We will remember them.

Cpl O’Connor RM and Cpl Day RAMC were fatally injured after coming under small arms fire near the village of Char Kutsa whilst on patrol with 40 Commando Royal Marines en route to conduct low level training with the Afghan Local Police. We will remember them.

Today, we remember Lionel Straker, a Stoker in the Trinidad Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve, who served 1942-44. Lionel supported #FleetAirAm flights, helping to rescue airmen who had crashed. He deployed twice to Canada and South Africa. We will remember them.

Today we remember Second Officer Kalyani Sen of the Women’s Royal Indian Naval Service (WRINS). Kalyani specialised in communication and intelligence work and became the first Indian servicewoman to visit the UK after being invited by The Admiralty. We will remember them.

Today we remember Marcus Bailey. Born in Barbados, he joined the Royal Navy in 1916 as an AB Chef and served onboard HMS Chester during the Battle of Jutland. He survived and his children, James and Lilian, went on to serve in the Second World War. We will remember them.

Today we remember the great grandfather of a Network member. Sajawal Khan served in the British Indian Army between 1942-45, as part of the Indian Signal Corps, where he deployed to Burma playing a vital role in maintaining communication lines. We will remember them.

#OnThisDay 60 years ago in 1964 Royal Navy #Sikh officers & ratings were permitted to wear uniform turbans instead of caps and to keep their hair long if they so wished. A cap badge of ribbon to be attached.

It was wonderful to share Diwali celebrations and our South Asian Heritage Project on board HMS Warrior last year. She’s a fantastic ship and The National Museum of the Royal Navy do a great job of maintaining her for future generations to appreciate.
