I’m very pleased to see my paper on the appropriate currency regime for an independent Scotland has now been published in the UK’s leading peer reviewed macroeconomic journal. I’m unaware of any other peer reviewed paper on this topic. dropbox.com/s/7l9xm7ra1s88…

Don't forget to read UofG ASBS uofgasbs.bsky.social' Ronald MacDonald paper revisiting the issue of currency regime choice for an independent #Scotland, finding that the option of the use of sterling post-independence is unlikely to be credible to international capital markets🔓👇 hubs.la/Q01ysSxr0

The paper by UofG ASBS uofgasbs.bsky.social' Ronald MacDonald revisits the issue of currency regime choice for an independent #Scotland, with an emphasis on SNP’s official policy of the informal use of #sterling post-#independence 2/6 cambridge.org/core/journals/…

1/ Scot Gov today published data on Scotland’s net trade and net primary income, with both measures including the offshore economy (ie North Sea oil & gas). Adding the two figures together gives Scotland’s current account deficit, which in 2021 was: 3.3% + 5.6% = 8.9% of GDP

My long read on Adam Smith and how this pillar of the Enlightenment wasn’t the father of free market capitalism as we’re told but really quite lefty. His ideas were hijacked by Thatcherites to pave the way for privatisation. Time to set the record straight heraldscotland.com/news/23994964.…

I’m pleased to see that my paper on Adam Smith and neoliberalism has been published today in a special issue of the NIER edited by colleagues UofG ASBS uofgasbs.bsky.social . There are a number of other interesting papers on Smith in the special issue.

What does Adam Smith's work tell us about how we can fix modern-day #capitalism, broken by the neo-liberal paradigm? 💡 Enjoy open access this week to UofG ASBS uofgasbs.bsky.social's Ronald MacDonald's paper from the latest volume of our Review 🔓⬇️ Cambridge Core Cambridge Economics hubs.la/Q02mbr7-0

🚨Mark Blyth slams Scot Gov indy case. Again.🚨 “I fully understand the desire to be separate. But the idea that this isn’t going to hurt? You can’t really say that Brexit is the worst thing ever, and then commit the biggest Brexit of all time. Which is literally what this is.”

A terrific result for the Highlands and hopefully a return to the crafting of policies that are relevant and meet the needs of locals and the many tourists who visit our patch. It’s a wonder we have a functioning local economy here after the disastrous policies pursued by the SNP

I’m an economist and have seen none of my core arguments re the economics of independence scientifically rebutted by anyone.

1/ Kate Forbes has been adamant in parliament that money “is being spent currently” (on the unspent EU structural funds story). But I have just received this remarkable FOI response, which tries to equate “spending” with “claiming reimbursement”. These are not the same thing.
