Not at all surprising. All science and technology can have unintended consequences, unless you can program every scenario in, which you can't. You have to let the program/system run before you encounter the unintended consequences or in this case, behavior, and then fix it.

This first happened to me when ChatGPT first came out and I was grading student assignments, one of which included references to work I knew (including my own work) and some I hadn't heard of. when we investigated the doi (urls for academic papers) they were completely made up.
