ReconAfrica plans to drill 12 more wells in Kavango forest. Environmentalists are objecting to the proposed drilling at communal and commercial farms. Frack Free Namibia has objected. The deadline to submit input or raise opposition is 27 February namibian.com.na/index.php?id=1…

The headline to this story is deceiving. Please note that rhinos have gone extinct twice in Botswana's recent history. And quite notably NOT during the current regime. So hold your horses on critiquing rhino conservation in present-day Botswana. Best to take a longterm view

The Neocolonial Oil Racket: A Canadian company has begun drilling near Africa’s protected Okavango River Delta, promising jobs for locals and endless fossil fuel for investors. So far, there’s been no oil — but there have been big profits for the founders rollingstone.com/politics/polit…

A reminder that Elsevier made $10.5 BILLION in 2022 from selling your academic journals and articles behind paywalls, and make more profit than Amazon, Google, and Apple every year… And paid the academics who wrote the articles $0 And paid the reviewers of the articles $0

From 1990–2019, research on Africa received only 3.8% of climate-related research funding globally. Of this 3.8% funding for climate research on Africa, 78% went to EU and North American institutions, while African institutions received only 14.5%.

Nick Simpson (@nickzimson) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Some direct results of this imbalance in funding are a dismally low number of publications led by locally-based authors and a lack of attention to African priorities. Read the full article here, doi.org/10.1080/175655…

This is absolutely devastating news for journalists and researchers alike. We should all be very very concerned and help amaBhungane appeal the court order. It is in our public interest. Unbelievable that media freedoms are no longer protected in South Africa in 2023.
