Why the hell was Bihar and UP getting more money than Kerala and Tamil Nadu in 1957, when the latter two were the poorest states in India? Oh right, power. This is the Hindi imperium. "Poverty" was just the excuse why Kerala is milked for UP/Bihar's benefit.

Moving taxes from the people of Kerala who grew cash crops and did blue collar jobs in Arab deserts so that Bihari elites could buy overpriced real estate in Delhi and Mumbai. That is the sum total of Indian tax devolution.

Also water bodies, hence the land scarcity. Also Kerala has silly land ceiling rules that prevent industrialization because it punishes economies of scale. Malayalis are very entrepreneurial but they struggle to scale up their businesses.

Ultimately there is the fact that India's regulatory structure explicitly punishes scale but most of these laws are constantly elided in other states due to lack of state capacity & extreme corruption. This is not the case in Kerala. Kerala is the actual Inspector Raj

In 1957, Bihar's rural poverty rate was 64%, it got 59% of revenues from Delhi. TN/Kerala's was 70%. They got 32%. Compounded over 75 years, it looks like extraction and stunting UK did to India. TN/KL elites threw in with UP elites for Sanskritized dream of India, and got what?

FACT 1: Most thermal power plants in Tamil Nadu were established after FEP was repealed in 1993, and therefore, they did not benefit from it. FACT 2: TN purchases coal both from CIL and TG and the expenditure on coal accounted just 1.68% of its Net Expenditure in FY 2023โ€“24

I have a bone to pick with this map. Kerala was never under the Chola Empire even though it was a part of ancient Tamilakam (Chola + Chera + Pandya). Kerala was mostly Chera + some Pandya & we focused on the West side of Indian Ocean (spice trade) while Cholas controlled the East

It's more that North Indian states are just not used to high labor wages. In Kerala, we pay โ‚น1000 per day (to Bihari workers) for the kind of job that North Indians pay โ‚น500 per day. Most households in Kerala don't employ an army of maids like I see in North Indian households.

I do think Indian labor laws need liberal reforms but that doesn't change the fact that North Indian elites are spoilt. They live in urban gated community bubbles in cities or as rural feudal lords to recognize their privilege. I do empathize with Bihari workers in this regard.

It is shocking how ubiquitous child labor is even in ultra-wealthy & progressive cities like Mumbai. I have never seen a child worker in Kerala in my life. If you sneakily employ one then your neighbors themselves will report you to the police.

Like I have said said before, everything Mamdani & American DSA types clamor for today have long been implemented in India to disastrous effects. Don't emulate Indian socialism, especially in places like NYC. It's a trap that we are trying to escape with little success.

Hindu identity in Kerala definitely transcends caste, way more so than Gujarat & Rajasthan, which have clear-cut cases of fault lines. It's just that the strong Malayali identity transcenda even that. This should be aspirational for the whole country.

FEP has ended in 1993 , it's been 33 year now . What's the literacy, IMR etc in Bihar and CH? Why cry now when you guys had 30 years to make your politicians accountable? Btw It's chepaer to bring Coal from Indonesia since 2000s. That's why Lord Adani is doing that.

Malayalis reading this would find it hilarious. It's crazy how uninformed Indians are about Kerala. Any Malayali who has visited Gujarat or Rajasthan can easily spot the caste issues there. Malayali H-identity is *much* more unified. These states don't even come remotely close.

Despite my anti-communism I'd agree that land reforms are the reason why caste issues are so rare in Kerala & why Malayali identity transcends caste & religious identities. TN with Dravidian politics & Maharashtra with Ambedkarism haven't been able to replicate Kerala's success
