Why do we think knowing about skill acquisition is so important? The development of the skill: the ability to learn, improve & develop performance, is central to all sport and physical activity 💡Learn more, as part of our Coach Learning Framework 👇 bit.ly/4igWfBD

Where are we now? (the illusion of professionalism). The mythical promise and marketing of ‘best practice’. A neoliberal market logic has now penetrated deeply into how we look at child-youth football. footblogball.wordpress.com/2025/05/14/whe…

Four studies (among MANY) that find that tailoring instruction to “learning styles” has precisely ZERO effect on learning They’re not real. This is one of the most conclusive topics of study in education yet it remains heresy to point out the pseudoscience that are “learning

3. Use constraints, not lectures. Want your players to drive with purpose? Add a rule. Want better spacing? Make it a scoring requirement. Constraints change behavior without needing a 5-minute speech. Coaches talk too much. Design smarter instead.

Basketball is learned through movement, not lectures. The best coaches build environments where players explore, fail, and grow through play. Confidence comes from reps. Development happens when athletes are free to experiment. Create. Compete. Improve.

Here’s where to start: ✅ Reflect on what you believe skill is. ✅ Ask whether your practice design matches that belief. ✅ Consider: are you trying to develop repeatable movements or helping players adapt to problems?

How do you stack the development deck in your favour? If you want to increase player development, you need to increase the probability of learning occurring That means designing environments that invite growth Here's a few ideas from work I did for an NBA team:

What do I want coaches to take from PoST framework in shooting? Last month I published my first research paper, adapting Fabi Otte research on Periodization of Skill Training to shooting development in the NBA . Here are the 4 points I hope coaches take away:
