Sharp RAND brief here on AI datacenter power. I'll flag two things: They freeze chip efficiency (kW / GPU; conservative) but forecast < 1/3 the compute that some other models expect. Still, this is a good baseline for getting our arms around AI’s future energy footprint.

The scale of natural gas storage is massive. On a peak day, underground gas storage delivered nearly 21,100 GWh of energy. That's over 140 times the energy from all batteries and pumped hydro.

Since 2006, the shift to natural gas in the U.S. electric power mix has done more than any other fuel to reduce CO2 emissions. CO2 savings from ⬆️ natural gas: 6.3 billion tons CO2 savings from ⬆️ zero carbon fuels: 4 billion tons

Indeed. I haven't heard of a single data center or large-scale manufacturing facility with high reliability requirements that isn't installing gas or diesel gensets for primary or backup power. Scale matters. Reliability matters.

Pretty naive analysis here tbh. We are in 2025 so far beyond the simple analysis of a copperplate network meeting average yearly demand when the real costs and unknowns for solar investors is the network upgrades that are necessary and the price crashing in markets where there is

Reality is natural gas is the default to meet power demand from AI data centers. The natural-gas plant is the thing that you know how to build, you know what it’s going to cost, and you know how to scale it and get it approved. #energy #power #natgas technologyreview.com/2025/05/20/111…
