most girls trying to get to know you will ask you boring, shallow questions like "what's up" or "how ya doing" but i like to ask more thoughtful questions. like "what is the name of the street you grew up on?" or "what is your mother's maiden name?"

Tim Minchin Sydney Opera House I was at this gig and the 2015 one, both amazing. Had my brother over from overseas to visit my new baby daughter so White Wine was particularly poignant. Thank you Tim.

“So, prog rock–you know, there were all these incredibly successful musicians having incredible careers and then punk came along and within a fairly short time they were done," says 'Amadeus' star Michael Sheen. "So I realised, Oh I see: Salieri." satpa.pe/sheen1u7O0

20-odd years and I still meet landholders that blow my mind. Today a bloke showed us the wetlands he’s actively managing for painted-snipe, bitterns & native fish, with a side trip to one of the active malleefowl mounds he’s monitoring. All power to private land conservationists.

"For over forty years the ALP has been living off the Medicare legacy of Whitlam, Hayden, Hawke and Blewett. It is about time the ALP did some serious thinking about updating this legacy" - johnmenadue.com/medicare-refor…

The meeting with French traverse guys was celebrated with pizza and beer! The drilling continues at a good pace: we have now reached 611 m of depth. Crackling and popping of ice cores as the pressure is released going up suggest that we may be reaching brittle ice! ©PNRA/IPEV

For those who care about this nation's sovereignty, the issue is whether new nuclear powered submarines would be able to be deployed and operated by the Australian Government without the support and oversight of the US Navy. Would these be "mother may I?" submarines?

Malcolm Turnbull (@turnbullmalcolm) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Some people, esp in the US, would say that Australia does not have sovereign capabilties now and that we cannot deploy our existing capabilities without US concurrence. That was not my view, and it was certainly not my aspiration. I believe in Australian sovereign independence.

Malcolm Turnbull (@turnbullmalcolm) 's Twitter Profile Photo

And I would add that it is not in the interests of our allies, including the US, for Australia to be seen as a compliant client of another nation. The less autonomy we are seen to have, the less influence. Sovereignty matters.

I'm fifty pages into "Spare" and it's so desperately sad: the tone is very different to how all the out-of-context quotes make it seem. Although he keeps making jokes - mainly self-deprecating - it just ACHES.

Stan Zamanek - like his hero Jones - deplored our NADC choices of Australian of the Year. On hearing that artist/philanthropist Arthur Boyd was the chosen one Stan spluttered “Who’s he? What’s he ever done for Australia?”

smh.com.au/national/cardi… Thinking of the victims and their families who were treated so appallingly by this man and his lieutenants over many decades.

George Pell is dead. Today I remember every victim and survivor of child sexual abuse who was harmed by him & every paedophile he covered for. Today I remember all those victims who are no longer with us. And I stand with all those survivors who still are. #GeorgePell

George Pell is dead. He came to embody the institutional failures of the Catholic Church. He didn’t act when he knew children were being sexually abused. I believe those who accused Pell of sexually abusing them. He destroyed lives. This will be his legacy. #pell

#Pell is dead. His supporters will praise him. His trial & high court decision to one side, none will mention his knowledge of paedophile priests, failing to report & moving them to new parishes to rape again. As an agnostic, I hope his God is real & George now finds justice.
