I'm in Paris for the dissertation defense by Rozenn Hotte. Her research is about marriage and women's wellbeing in Senegal and Benin. She did a great job--check out her website: sites.google.com/view/rozennhot…

I was in Burkina Faso doing dissertation research in 2000-2001 soon after Zongo was killed and this was still all my colleagues wanted to talk about, but it was always in hushed tones and never in public. Fascinating history.

Thanks VoxEU and CEPR for publishing my blog post about the long-term and intergenerational impacts of school construction in Indonesia. The project is joint with Marieke Kleemans and @DanielHalim93. Here's the post: voxeu.org/article/long-t…

Agree. Was taught by Mike Boozer to always start projects with graphing and simple descriptive stats and then go from there. Graduate students often want to start with the complicated econometrics first.

Eid Mubarak to all those celebrating! Nothing like that first morning tea when you've gone without for a month. Gives you a tiny taste of what those who are food insecure go through all the time. I'm blessed to have a job that let's me try to do something about it.

Super interesting new work on job search/training by my colleague AlexBartik. Excited to see this project coming together and can't wait to see the final results.

What were the chances of surviving childhood in the past? For millennia, 1-in-4 died in the first year of life; half did not reach puberty. Our recent post: ourworldindata.org/child-mortalit…

Powerful thread by @michelson_hope Also depressing some of the things faculty at US schools need to be thinking about. I'll tag #econadvice because I doubt grad schools are teaching this.

Very cool assignment for courses on Africa by @texasinafrica I have a similar discussion in my class and I also have the students consider what stereotypes students at African universities might have about America and why those might or might not be accurate.

Cool NY Times arricle about my new EconatIllinois colleague Andy Garin Unfortunately they only cite the first author (Brett Collins), but Andy's part of the "other collaborators"

Thanks to IGI Birmingham for organizing the lecture. And to Fiona Carmichael and Chris Darko for inviting me to Birmingham. Wonderful inter-disciplinary visit meeting lots of non-economists doing research in Africa. Learned a lot this week.

Some really good advice from AlexBartik about things to consider when picking research projects. Goes beyond "select a credible identification strategy" and gets at the human side of the project, something economists often forget about
