Day 2: Exploring North America’s tallest dunes in the San Luis Valley. The dunes are upwards of 10,000 years old, the sand sourced from residual paleo lakes following the draining of Lake Alamosa, which is thought to have helped establish the Rio Grande gorge.

Day 3: Summer Coon volcano and it’s dikes, represent some the earliest volcanism of Rio Grande rifting. Nearby is the Fish Canyon tuff (largest ash-flow tuff in the world). Minerals from this 27 million year old ignimbrite provide important geochronological standards.

Day 4: The San Juan Mountains-from 1.4 billion to 23 million years of geologic history in one day. #thegreatunconformity #silvertoncaldera #goldmining

Day 5: The Black Canyon of the Gunnison- this deep, steep narrow gorge is the result of just 2 million years of river erosion into 1.8 million year old metamorphic uplifted and exposed 60 million years ago! #canyon #proterozoicbasement
