Had an amazing day viewing (an eclectic mix of) Chinese paintings and porcelains with Zoe Kwok and Cary Liu at ⁦Princeton Art Museum⁩’s storage space. Nothing better than bouncing off ideas with wonderful curator-colleagues

Difficult to summarise my first 3 weeks in China (after five years!) but the amount of generosity, hospitality & kindness I've been met with is genuinely mind-blowing! So good to be here, talking to colleagues & friends about all things palaces for the living & the dead 🤓

Only two more days to read my article FOR FREE online: burlington.org.uk/archive/articl… I show how this extraordinary painting is made from same-length paper sheets with a recurring iconography & argue that these sheets were reused for a new purpose as offerings at the imperial mausolea

I had so much fun showing subscribers to Burlington Magazine the extraordinary handscroll Pictures of Ancient Playthings on display at the V&A’s China Gallery - the subject of an article in the June magazine. Do reach out if you’re interested in reading this new research too!

Had a fantastic time at Burghley House a couple of weeks back looking at Chinese and some Japanese porcelains - some enormously famous and surprising pieces alike - but was so smitten by their (Asian) lacquer and textiles 😍

#Twitterstorians can anybody help with the contact details of a retired professor? Alan Richard Sweeten published his research on the early Qing tombs in Shenyang in 2022, again in 2009-2010 with help of Dumbarton Oaks but I cannot find his email online! doaks.org/research/garde…
