Legal aid rates are fixed by government far below market rates. The Mail’s hatchet job today showed that errors affect only 0.01% of the legal aid budget. “Fat cat” legal aid lawyers often earn below minimum wage. Andrew is paid multiple times more to spread lies and hate. 👍

Nothing sheds light on varied understanding of the Mental Capacity Act like a mass roll out of medical procedures on people who are unable to consent to it.

Many of you will have seen a Tweet from a member of the Bar that caused controversy in recent days. I have put my views into a blog. jaimerhblog.wordpress.com/2021/01/24/the…

Oh boy. It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these. Presumably this is in honour of the paperback publication of #FakeLaw next week, 27 May 2021. Let’s look at why this trash from the Mail is as misleading as it is dangerous. [THREAD]

Lawyers can over-estimate how much families understand of the court hearings concerning their relatives. Here's one mother's account of hearings from 2020. An observer's blog of a hearing in the same case in 2021 will be published later this week. openjusticecourtofprotection.org/2021/06/07/an-…

Last month I defended in a rape case said to have happened in 2016 and reported the same night and defendant arrested the next day. So, yeah, this new dog theft law which is already a crime is just what we need

The Secret Barrister 🦋 (@barristersecret) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Criminal already face consequences for pet theft. It’s in the Theft Act 1968. Section 1. The offence of theft. Maximum sentence 7 years. You disingenuous grifters.

Here are some depressing graphs for y'all... interested to get the views of BIAs and DOLS teams... Out of 240,455 DoLS applications in 2018-19, how many do you think were refused because the DoLS criteria weren't met... answers coming up

One question you don't hear asked is whether City lawyers can really be much help working pro bono. What useful insight could a junior who works in commercial law provide on a housing or welfare dispute, for example? lawgazette.co.uk/news/labour-te…

Mobile phone evidence and defence lawyers is PM’s explanation for failure of justice system to deal effectively with violence against women and girls. No. It’s savage cuts in expenditure, no leadership and a government which couldn’t care less about an effective justice system.

A young man spends half his life locked up. No criminal. It's because he self-harmed and was diagnosed with schizophrenia, then autism. His release into normal life (not a big ask) is because his mother 'fought tooth and nail'. For 15 years. 15 years. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

The jury system is the cornerstone of the justice system. Questioning a lawful verdict UNDERMINES the rule of law. As does proroguing parliament and attacking judges.

Not a single high profile criminal case can now pass without the Attorney General - a person with no experience of criminal law - exploiting it for political gain. It is difficult to think of an AG who has more enthusiastically abused their office.

The Secret Barrister 🦋 (@barristersecret) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This is a lie. 81.5% voted for this action. There is no “15% pay rise” on offer. There is no “£7,000 more a year”. Junior criminal barristers will remain on less than minimum wage. Read the truth here: x.com/barristersecre…

As Attorney General, Ms Braverman repeatedly abused her office for political capital; condoned law-breaking; jeopardised a potential criminal investigation into a political ally; briefed against judges in the tabloids; and stayed silent as the criminal justice system collapsed 👍
