"Rocky and His Friends" won no Emmys last night? None? Through tattered clothes small vices do appear. Robes and furred gowns hide all. Plate sin with gold, And the strong lance of justice hurtless breaks. Arm it in rags, a pygmy’s straw does pierce it.

In 1975, two people tried to kill Gerald Ford in less than three weeks. Amazingly, Ford didn't try to rile up the country, inflame America's anger - or try to fundraise off it. But that's back when we expected more of our national leaders. theatlantic.com/newsletters/ar…

Today's lesson from Gibbon: it is unremarkable that the reputation of Diocletian was not spotless: he was by birth a Dalmatian.

I have so often excoriated the foolish phrase "free gift," that it seems only fair to acknowledge that I've encountered it twice in Gibbon, ch. 14.

—Why does Frost call the withered hag (once the picture pride of Hollywood) "Abishag"? —Abishag was a Shunammite, she was a very fair damsel, and she cherished the king; but he knew her not. —You call that an explanation?

There appear to be no Classics Illustrated versions of The Sound and the Fury, Finnegans Wake, In Search of Lost Time, The Prelude, or 'Tis Pity She's a Whore. Major lacunae here.
