This is pretty amazing: the ocean heat content averaged over the Gulf of Mexico is obliterating previous all-time record highs. It's 126% of average for the date. bmcnoldy.earth.miami.edu/tropics/ohc/

I have my differences with their research, but undoubtedly the return to the study of institutions is very welcomed in political economy in general. I need to read Branko Milanovic reaction!

The work by today's winners of the Nobel Prize in economics has been challenged by scholars like Yuen Yuen Ang, Mushtaq Khan, and Ha-Joon Chang. Read them! Then you will understand that enforcing the North's capitalist institutions in the South does not lead to development.

Congrats to AJR! 🌟 They are brilliant. But I don't agree with their idealized portrayal of institutions in Western development It is historically inaccurate, if not ideologized Thus, not only do they struggle to explain China, they also can't explain why Western economies

Branko Milanovic (@brankomilan) 's Twitter Profile Photo

"Extractive institutions" by the way are never defined. And indeed their later papers, and papers of others who followed them, did become "Wikipedia w/ regressions". They would have a capsule history of the place (very simplified or wrong) & then they would run regression on

Pseudoerasmus (@pseudoerasmus) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Not true that pre-AJR econs ignored institutions. Econs once wrote country case studies with deep institutional knowledge, but this started falling out of favour with 1980s cross-country regressions. AJR intervened at a time when detailed institutional knowledge was largely lost.

Pseudoerasmus (@pseudoerasmus) 's Twitter Profile Photo

AJR are highly influential. But their key takeaway {coalition of interests who hold political power determine economic institution} itself is NOT influential. Most econs take AJR as licence to utter the word 'institutions' & they only mean secure property rights & rule of law ;-)

Pseudoerasmus (@pseudoerasmus) 's Twitter Profile Photo

AJR is basically North with math & regressions, but 2 major modifications they make are (1) integration of colonialism as a cause of underdevelopment into the liberal development model; (2) greater emphasis on income distribution & social power of private actors.

I agree with everyone the empirics are not the point, but everyone still talks about them anyway so why does everyone fixate on the instruments so much? Their papers are filled to the brim with arbitrary qualitative indices treated like continuous variables! Below from Vollrath

I’ve worked in government and universities for many years. Apparently, universities believe they need so high levels of security for a email account that governments only use in some very specialised agencies. Come on! It’s just an email!

The beauty of economics is that because nobody reads anything that was written more than 5 years ago, theories, hypotheses, doctrines can be permanently reinvented, and people can get famous for a couple of years until what they wrote is in turn forgotten.

Journal paper accepted! 🎉🎉🎉 After one reviewer in other journal wanted me to write something completely different, and another said “but what about… (unrelated thing)”, this journal great reviewers actually helped! Soon you will be able to read it!
