Dutch newspaper NRC published a special report on the true cost of impossibly cheap products. If you are paying less for #coffee than it costs to produce it without negative social or environmental side-effects, someone else is paying the true price: nrc.nl/nieuws/2020/01….

Dutch consumers are drinking less #coffee, but spend 20% more on it. That must surely benefit our entire industry? Channa Brunt wrote an insightful article for One World Media in which she asked me why coffee farmers are still unable to earn a living income. oneworld.nl/mensenrechten/…

And I leave this here, also from the report... evolution of global market shares in consumption: exporting countries from 22% to 31%. #coffee #domestic #consumption

At the Fairtrade Intl Living Income Forum I spoke about a living income for #coffee farmers. My call to action: No more vague claims about #impact. No promises of a better price without proof. Instead, only provide verifiable numbers about farmers' ability to earn a Living Income.

Last September I published my essay 'The Future of Poverty-Free Coffee' (linkedin.com/pulse/future-p…). Were our Ethiopian small-scale farmers able to earn a #livingincome for their families? Hear the results this Friday at 12:15 in the Transformatorhuis at Amsterdam Coffee Festival!

"A living income is a human right, but one that often remains out of sight in long, opaque supply-chains. Specialty coffee roasters tend to believe that because we pay a premium for higher-quality coffee on our end, the farmer earns more. Is that true? fairfood.nl/en/blog/can-a-…

For years, the price small-scale farmers for their #coffee has been too low to cover household expenses or even cost of production. We reveal a fully transparent Ethiopian supply-chain, allowing roasters to check exactly what their farmers were paid. youtu.be/HgYBhCy31zQ

Wow, the Ndaroini are the best-paid growers in Kenya! That is worth celebrating Kenya’s @dailynation published this short piece about the pay-out on the 26th of June. #makecoffeebetter #betterpices #specialtycoffee #coffeechain #dailynation

The weight of coffee production presses heavily on the climate. And global coffee prices do not cover a living income for many of the 25-million coffee smallholders. We need to rethink coffee. Read how we can make baby-steps towards a new coffee economy: bit.ly/2S6VBg2

For most of its 4.5B-year life, #earth was very inhospitable to animal life: the early atmosphere consisted of #CO2, water vapor, ammonia and methane - but no oxygen. Only 1B years ago, algae started turning H2O and CO2 into O2 and made earth's #climate hospitable to animal life.

Here is my call to the #coffee sector: “Let’s not claim that we pay a better price to the producers without providing proof”. Thanks to the #LivingWageLab, FairFood, Hivos Nederland and especially to Isa Miralles and Nada Van Schouwenburg for inviting me. youtube.com/watch?v=Wgq8vw…

A billion years ago, early plants harnessed the power of the sun to turn CO2 + H20 into O2 and organic matter and turned a barren Earth into a planet hospitable to animal life. Did you know that 1ha of #coffee #forest in Ethiopia can capture hundreds of tons of CO2 today?

🏭 Nespresso wants to be carbon neutral by 2022, Illycafe wants to do the same by 2033 and Starbucks wants to see a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2033. Why are specialty coffee brands falling behind when it comes to climate action? #coffee #ClimateCrisis

Breaking: Global carbon emissions fell by 6.7% in 2020, erasing nearly a decade of rising emissions amid pandemic lockdowns. This means that if the world's Covid recovery prioritizes climate policies, global emissions will have permanently peaked in 2019. globalcarbonproject.org/carbonbudget/i…

This chart is part of a recent paper comparing the cradle-to-cradle carbon footprint 👣 of brewed coffee from different origins. Brazil has the largest footprint, due to the high use of chemical fertilizers. #coffee #sustainability #ClimateAction #carbonfootprint
