Prep: after completing a massive form on a tight deadline, they take over a year to see you. The 1st appointment I was given required almost 2 hours on a bus (I can't drive) at rush hour to get there for 9 am. I call, and there's an assessment centre less than a mile from me.

I get ID & evidence, & choose an outfit I would wear on a day I wasn't feeling very well (like that day). No belts, buckles, buttons, badges, clasps, make-up, nail paint, hair styling, & minimal jewellery. I also wear nothing with any personality to avoid bias.

I get there. The ramp is narrow, the desk is too high to see over, & the waiting room has no space for wheelchair users. Still the most accessible disability assessment centre I've seen (last one had a step). The assessment room is also hard to get the wheelchair in.

The assessment is an hour and despite talking for most of that, no water is offered. From the moment you enter, you are watched like a hawk. Most things I'm asked about are expected; how my disability impacts my daily life, and how I've adapted my life since becoming disabled.

2 things catch me off guard. Despite never being included as dependents on any other form I've ever seen, pets count as dependents here. Cats are pretty low maintenance at least. I can't help but wonder whether this applies to assistance animals like guide dogs.

Then they ask about my job. Being asked about hours, the type of work, & what adjustments I have is fair, but it goes WAY beyond this. I have to provide more detail on specific responsibilities. I can't help but feel being a leader in a medical research team counted against me.

At the end of the assessment are some physical tasks, supposedly voluntary. They all hurt & I'm still feeling the effects, but again I felt that refusal to do them could count against me. At least they didn't make me do the squat, which would have ended up with me on the floor.

We made it! Now to wait another 2 months while someone who has never met me makes a decision about my disability, based on a report from the assessor. Last time I applied, they basically ignored what was in the report anyway, & decided I could do things I couldn't. End of thread.

I met two lovely young guys. Eric and Joey who spend their times running with shelter dogs. The aim is to give the dogs exposure and get them adopted while getting exercise. Wonderful idea (4/8)

Niall Harbison Hey Niall, my dog is a pill thief as well, and we have Activated Charcoal on hand at all times. I have saved my dogs lives with these pills: ant poison, bathroom cleansers, pain meds, all sorts of things they've eaten, and the A/C saved them
