A short article by me about need to address the persistent root causes of #flood risk creation in #England. "How England’s broken planning system has created (not reduced) the risk of floods" in The Conversation #DisastersAreNotNatural theconversation.com/how-englands-b…

Unfortunately this is still happening... There are way too many ‘solutions’ proposed by ‘experts’ who don’t know anything about the context in which these ‘solutions’ are to be implemented. And then it comes as a surprise that the proposed solutions don’t work.

Hooray! Season 2 is out! Jason von Meding 🇵🇸 & I loved talking to Lori Peek of Natural Hazards Center about the importance of #stories in #disaster studies. We hope you’ll enjoy this episode as much as we do.

Participation is important for disaster risk management. In #Brazil there are many challenges in this topic. We need more NGOs working in DRM. Check the chapter: #NGOs and #NaturalHazard #Governance in #LatinAmerica and the Caribbean -oxfordre.com/naturalhazards…

Snaith, a town in the East Riding of Yorkshire, has been devastated by #flooding - but there are plans to build 800 more homes! Is this a wise development decision? hulldailymail.co.uk/news/hull-east…

Many Lake District rivers have been straighted over centuries by farmers and landowners. This one, Newlands Beck near Braithwaite, is making a bid for freedom having been assisted by Storm Ciara. #fluvial #geomorphology #erosion #farming #LakeDistrict #stormciara

Mary Long-Dhonau OBE I believe this shocking case is a Redrow Homes dev't (Carnegie Court) near Bassaleg, Newport. Some of the houses have been built right along the banks of the Ebbw River. Shocked to see this development was permitted. Maps from 1970, 2000s (site shown) and with new houses added.

@USofDisaster Re: the problematic 'Disaster Cycle', I've mulled over the phases possibly being viewed as a helix aligned with time and resources, e.g.: a) prep/mitig (blue), relief/response (red) b) an event c) lesser event, and ultimately, d) elimitated risk 👇
