The Pattern 1853 Rifle Musket originally used Pritchett's cylindro-conoidal bullet. 1855 trials gave cause for concern about performance. Subsequent trials resulted in adoption of base plugs for bullet: an iron cup, box-wood plug and finally clay plug. researchpress.uk/firearms/ammun…
