This is a good take. Sometimes as an Instructor Pilot (IP), you have a long leash to let the student learn by making mistakes (like in military airspace w/ altitude blocks). Other times, not so much.

My guess is this is an incentive flight. Ejection seat equipped jets have a selector switch that chooses which aircrew ejection seat fires when one of the crew pulls. When you’ve got two qualified crew onboard, you default to either of them being able to make the call to go.

There’s a mixed bag of reasons for this. After 9/11, Boeing couldn’t justify continued production of B757 - given slack demand, but the jet soldiers on because its performance makes it good fit for certain thin or hot and high routes. B777-200 is more a factor of low fuel

New Zealand Defense Force announced yesterday that the replacement for their B757 transports will be A321XLR. Sad to never get to see this aircraft display. Regardless of B737 MAX or A321 - whatever the Kiwis picked would never have the same presence.
