Joe's response to "If I stop giving points for homework they won't do it!" "Once teachers explicitly reconnect the purpose of homework--to practice and prepare for the assessment--to more successful results on the assessment, intrinsic motivation reawakens in students"

Questions we should be asking about homework: "Why do we give everyone the same task when we know learners differ?" "Why not empower students to design their own tasks? "Is it fair to penalize non-completion when home conditions vary?" Should kids work longer than an 8 hour day?"

Would we even need explicit SEL programs if we gave students more control over what and how they learn--wouldn't much of SEL develop organically? How do they learn to self-regulate, problem-solve, and set goals when we micro-direct their learning?

China’s Ministry of Education is getting serious about reeling in the homework load and prioritizing sleep—very top-down but also very child-centered. Students get more sleep as workload reduced - Chinadaily.com.cn global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202112/23/WS…

Quote from school official as they called a snow day without virtual learning: “ we believe that traditional snow days provide a memorable and much loved childhood experience for our students”. As well it should be!

#ELMagChat Students and teachers alike need more downtime, longer lunch breaks, and longer than 3 minutes in between classes. A block of non-academic time for students where they are free to just relax or visit teachers or work on homework.

#ELMagChat A7 take time every day to connect with nature, exercise daily (even if only 10 minutes), connect with friends by text or phone every week, turn off all devices at least one hour before bedtime!

Started school this week. I have my students for multiple years. I know my eyes lit up when I saw them for the first time. What was absolutely beautiful was that their eyes reflected mine when they saw me! #edchat
