In December 2021, we were in the western part of Bellewaardestraat, where we discovered several trench segments, a collapsed tunnel, and a German storage room.

In January 2022, we worked on the eastern section of Bellewaardestraat at its intersection with Frezenbergstraat. Unfortunately, the preservation of the features was not ideal, primarily due to post-war battlefield clearances, with the exception of the bunker near Surbiton Villas

In April, we were very close to Clapham Junction, in Oude Kortrijkstraat, just north of the Menin Road where we uncovered the original road pavement, which was riddled by numerous bomb craters. Within them, well-preserved items such as crates, Lewis gun drums, and various kit

Most extraordinary was the grouser spud from a Mark IV tank. We knew from aerials that one stranded next to the road, but actually finding a piece was very special. Identified as tank 2668, B49 Britannia. Many pictures of it can be found. The plaque was likely connected to it too

In August we were at Westhoek where we found a German trench, known as Jabber trench. The excavation showed that it was turned when captured by Commonwealth forces in August 1917. The ditch in front of the trench proofs that they dug themselves in in the parapet

Besides the turning of the trench, several other locations and finds that testified to the fierce battle that had raged here in extremely difficult circumstances, were discovered

Last December and January we were between Westhoek and the old railway where the preservation of the features again was not good, except for a few trench segments and of course the SMLE we found the last day.

Under the asphalt, it once again became evident that the preservation of the artefacts was exceptional. During the inventory next week, we'll share updates with photos of the cleaned pieces. Here are a few items that emerged from the ground looking almost new #FWW #Archaeology

Some artefacts have been photographed after cleaning, and it's incredible to see their remarkable condition. It's sometimes hard to believe they've been buried underground for over a century... Don't forget to follow us for more updates #FWW #Archaeology

Yesterday, 109 years ago, Albert Oehlre was killed near Wijtschate. His remains, along with those of 21 others, were discovered in a mass grave next to the steam mill 🌟DigHill80.com. He was a gardener from Buch (Nürnberg) and served in the Bavarian RIR Nr. 21. He was only 17

We need #help identifying this object. It was found near the location where we discovered the spud of a Mark IV tank. Given the thickness of the steel, there is a possibility that it is also a part related to the tank. Can someone confirm and/or identify this?

Little time to post lately, but didn't want to withhold these from you. I keep repeating myself, but the preservation of the artefacts from Frezenberg is exceptional. Hard to believe these were buried for over 100 years on the battlefields of the Ypres Salient. #FWW #Archaeology

The omnipresence and tremendous power of artillery is a recurring theme in studying the artefacts. These finds were all affected by shrapnel or destroyed by the shockwaves. #FWW #Archaeology

A year ago, we had the opportunity to investigate this German Atlantikwall bunker. Due to inaccessible entrances, the only option was through the roof. It turned out to be a few extraordinary days with a great team. #Archaeology

Today, we were privileged to attend the reburial of 4 French soldiers at Saint-Charles de Potyze. Our teams were responsible for their recovery: a Tirailleur Sénégalais, a Chasseur and a French soldier, all unknown. And Sgt Valentin Menetre (2e B. Chasseur à Pied).

Very pleased to be able to share this. A study into which a lot of time and energy has been invested. But above all, a subject that is very close to my heart. With a result that we can certainly be proud of. Raph De Brant Skylarcs onroerenderfgoed.be/blog/syntar-19… #FWW #Archaeology

Almost there! The 🌟DigHill80.com report is nearly final, approved by Flanders Heritage Agency, and almost ready for submission. I’d love to share it with you, but it needs translating to English. AI translated it, but it needs refining by native speakers. Any volunteers to #help?
