Active ⁦USyd Casuals Network⁩ member ⁦Yaegan Doran⁩ featured on ⁦Four Corners⁩ tonight talking about precarious uni workers’ struggles. Casualised workers are exploited by uni managers who regularly fire us at will & abused by the Federal Govt who are denying us JobKeeper.

In Saturday’s Geelong Advertiser, from a Deakin University staff member. Staff don’t need mug cake and wellness tips. We need secure jobs, working conditions that don’t bleed us dry, university management that doesn’t gaslight us with calls for our “flexibility”.

Big news from Tasmania with Jacqui Lambie stating she will vote against the Morrison government's university funding cuts. The government needs 3 of 5 cross-benchers to get it through

Jacqui Lambie has made the right decision and should be congratulated. But the future of Australian universities is too important to lie in the hands of a couple of cross-benchers. We need to kill Tehan's bill permanently, and insulate higher ed from the wreckers, for good.

Stats are in on #WageTheft from #Casuals at #LaTrobe and it's not good... 63% of casuals were unpaid for work they performed, 49% fear repercussions for asking to be paid for all their hours, and 32% were instructed to fudge their timesheets. More to come in our full report.

If you supervise any casual staff make sure you tell them to claim 7 hours and support that claim. Excluding our casual staff from "wellness" as well as job security and basic dignity is beyond disdainful. Surely management realise how tone-deaf this is?

Don't believe management. Link in with the Casuals Network if you want your wages back. Ongoing staff: Support your most precarious colleagues - don't stand for stealing their wages.

Alison Atkinson-Phillips Sarah Sophie Clark It is a good question. Just devastating, particularly after the sacrifices that staff have already made. We know a lot of good unionists in that branch who are organising resistance on many fronts, such as La Trobe Rank and File, who would welcome all the support they can get ✊

so apparently melb uni is now hiring people on 'periodic' appointments, which just means they don't have to pay them over the christmas shutdown period. it's unacceptable, it's a different form of casualisation, and we can't allow it to become the future of academic employment
