I didn't think any modern bombings could be worse than Putin's in Grozny, or Assad's in Aleppo, but #Netanyahu has created a new circle of Hell. United Nations #CeasefireNOW

#bcbudget went in on emergency response but made no clear investments in the root causes of disasters, like #oldgrowth and #watershed protection, say experts. My latest for The Tyee thetyee.ca/News/2024/02/2…

A landslide in December caused oil to spill near Fraser River’s prime sturgeon habitat, with worst-case projections of 2,000 litres spilled. Why did it take nearly three months to begin cleanup? via Steph Eva Wood: thenarwhal.ca/fraser-river-o…

After a record-breaking drought and fire season, this month’s B.C. budget made sizable investments in emergency response. But the focus of those investments is still on response, not prevention. Zoë Yunker (@zoeyunker on Bluesky) explains. #bcpoli thetyee.ca/News/2024/02/2…

Wow. UAW President Shawn Fain isn’t mincing words. “People just don’t want to work…I agree…The people I’m talking about are the Wall Street Freeloaders: The Masters of Passive Income.” This is worth a watch. #UnionsForAll

Great story by Brenna Owen about the paradigm shift underway in forest hydrology. Dr. Younes Alila's research has changed our understanding of how forests regulate groundwater – and how much clearcutting can increase the frequency and magnitude of floods. ottawa.citynews.ca/2024/03/17/in-…

Looking forward to this event Thursday in Vancouver by Wilderness Committee about the spraying of #glyphosate in BC forestry, featuring scientist @DrSuzanneSimard and James Steidle from StopthesprayBC, who has been an absolute champion on this issue for years. eventbrite.ca/e/lets-get-pes…

This Saturday, community groups in Peachland and Kelowna are hosting a free online and in-person event with some great speakers about the future of BC's forests and watersheds. Sign up to tune in online or come out in person if you're in the Okanagan >> eventbrite.ca/e/future-of-ou…

I'm glad to see this historic land title agreement with the Haida Nation go forward without a costly court battle. I would have loved to see this in the Nuchatlaht Nation's title case, but instead, bc gov't lawyers fought them tooth and nail to the very end.

It's not just that this year's snowpack has been much smaller than normal. It's also melting waaaaaaaay earlier than normal. The BC River Forecast Centre highlights this graph, which shows snow at Brenda Mine will be gone within days, farrrr earlier than ever recorded.

I'm a big fan of Stefan Labbé's forestry reporting. This is a great piece about the timber industry's claims that they can be "heroes" against wildfires. He debunks this as the greenwashing it clearly is. The logging industry is what got us into this mess. vancouverisawesome.com/highlights/can…

Great piece by Ben Parfitt about how the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami led to an energy crunch that spurred Japanese demand for biomass that is now putting the squeeze on BC's primary forests, which are facing a supply crunch and increased demand. thetyee.ca/Analysis/2024/…

A great piece of reporting by @jwsthomson on how noise pollution from tanker traffic is affecting Southern Resident Orcas. The first completed piece funded by Science Media Centre and Sitka Foundation's Messengers of Biodiversity Grant. Looking forward to the rest! theglobeandmail.com/canada/article…

Absolutely. I would also add, these things they use to deflect responsibility from their over-cutting – insects, disease, wildfire – have been exacerbated by industrial logging practices. The drying out and degradation of the landscape is directly linked to rampant clearcutting.
