Today I delivered this paper (based on research for a forthcoming book) at the 2025 BRAIS Conference. It was well-received at our Cambridge Muslim College panel. Afterwards, myself and colleagues had a good discussion on the formation of Hanafi and Hadith schools in 3rd/4th centuries.

This is a pioneering and highly significant contribution to the much-needed dialogue between contemporary analytic philosophy and Islamic philosophy and rational theology. Sincere thanks!

I think it's perfectly possible to establish hadith reports as credible historical sources within academic disciplines, and to use much of traditional Hadith methods in that. But it needs a level of cross-tradition scholarly engagement from both "sides" that we haven't seen yet.

Funny Valentine I think we need to have a nuanced understanding of what "definitive" means when reporting history from 1500 years ago. Muslim scholars were quite comfortable with the category of non-definitive (zanni). The question of these "flaws" also needs better understanding in academic

ICMA is still in its infancy, in my opinion we just recently transitioned from a revisionist/skeptical model to a more neutral model. It also doesn't help that some aspects of the revisionist aspect still survives an example being Pavlovitch's treatment of Single Strands.
