Watching presidential debates online on the web, and the caption rendering is a travesty. Unreadable default #caption configuration in fullscreen video mode. Appalling (but sadly, not surprising), how much the industry pays lip service to FCC rules, but neglects usability. 1/10

Displaying emotions and paralinguistic information alongside closed captions benefits viewers, but more work remains to be done on how best to convey this information. 2/2

Shane Angel, another IT/STAMPGallaudet major at Gallaudet University is presenting at #CSUNATC22 now, on the topic of “Teleconference Sign Language Detection,” which he investigated during last year’s U.S. National Science Foundation-funded REU under Raja Kushalnagar’s and my mentorship. 1/2

Two main questions: what tech/environmental characteristics make the detection algorithm perform at its best, and what would a good user interface look like? (Oh, and Zoom, Microsoft Teams et al should hurry to implement this, to auto-pin/spotlight signers!) 2/2
