RMS Titanic’s “B” Boiler is approximately 20 feet (7 m) tall. 29 steam boilers on Titanic: 24 boilers double-ended, 5 single-ended. 162 furnaces stoked with coal by 200 workers by shovel, and 600 tons of coal per day to maintain 22 knots. 3D Video © WHOI #Titanic #RMSTitanic

The gross weight of RMS #Titanic—which includes the weight of the ship itself plus its cargo, passengers, crew, and any supplies—was approximately 46,000 tons. If the forward bow section is 1/10th of vessel ≈ 88 feet how many tons is it to lift?

James Cameron's hypothesis as to how the front half landed in Titanic: 20 Years Later (2017). When the bow plowed into the seabed the hydraulic pressure inside the number 1 hold popped the hatch cover and forward momentum carried it a distance forward where it now rests.

In 1914, American architect Charles Ashley Smith (1866-1948) proposed an idea to recover the wreck. It would be another 73 years until the exact wreck location was discovered by a joint American-French expedition on September 1, 1985. #Titanic #rmstitanic #raisetitanic

Estimates are that there is relatively little loss of steel over the 100 years or so at that depth and temperature. The main issue I see is actually lifting whatever you want to recover from the ocean floor. #Titanic #RMSTitanic #raisethetitanic

Titanic's main deck anchor was not a "spare", it was the center anchor, one of three bow anchors. It weighed 15.8 tons located in anchor well on the forecastle deck. Before any lifting three securing clamps are removed, here rigged for sailing. #Titanic #rmstitanic #raisetitanic

It was one of the single-ended boilers that Ballard first spotted when the wreck of Titanic was identified back in 1985. Is that the most symbolic to lift, or the full-sized 91 tons? Which boiler should be raised? #titanic #rmstitanic #raisetitanic

The remains of Titanic rest at the end of Cameron Canyon (not for filmmaker James, but Canadian scientific researcher Harky Cameron) descending from the Newfoundland Ridge to an abyssal plain about 2.5 miles below the ocean surface. #Titanic #RMSTitanic #raisetitanic

Recover as much as possible. Why let it waste in the depths... yes people died but their legacy can live on. Video © Magellan/Atlantic Productions. #rmstitanic #Titanic #raisetitanic
