I first met Prof D when I was a PhD student and he was writing his book in residence at NCBS. He was warm, witty, and endlessly stimulating. Students like me gravitated to his lunch table, and even after years, the discussions never felt repetitive.

After 30 years of research and teaching, I found that I cannot teach any subject unless I have understood it fully. Hence I normally had to write a book before I teach any new course. Also, I found that, teaching is the best, probably only, way to do deeper and better research.
