Beams splash in the ATLAS Experiment! 🎇 For the first time in over 2 years, pilot beams are back in the LHC. ATLAS recorded its first "splash" collision events, testing the detector with real particles in preparation for the 2022 restart. Learn more: cern.ch/go/n9lp

🎙️New #LHC event displays just dropped. Check out these visualisations of proton beams splashing inside the ATLAS Experiment at CERN this morning! These splashes play a key role in preparing the detector for data-taking. Learn more: cern.ch/go/VK69

Almost a little sad that I won't be able to watch the stream live... will be busy inside of one of the experiment's control rooms ;)

A Thirty Laps Around the Sun... What a time scale, just daring to imagine 30y ago that today we could handle all the data collected (several 100s of PB!) seems just crazy

Around 6:00 am this morning LHC dumped it's last beams for this year. Hope I can finally get some rest soon now that my days will be less affected by frequent changes of plans during operations (experiments often need to adjust very quickly)

Physicists: prepare for particles 🫡 Have you ever wondered how the ATLAS experiment prepares for the restart of the #LHC and the start of the data-taking season? Hear from @ATLASExperiment physicists Monica, Andrej, and Catrin about how they  got ready for chapter three of

If anyone's wondering what kind of systems I've been busy with during the last few years you may want to tune in here (the speaker is low balling some numbers, the two bigger experiments would produce well over 50 TB/s without a hardware trigger ;) )

If anyone's wondering why we spend huge efforts to only store a tiny but carefully selected fraction of data that could come from our detector: even that data (+simulated data) is huge! Storing and managing it is yet another challenge
